The Diploma in Perioperative Theatre Technology is a competency-based Level 6 programme designed to prepare learners to support the safe, organised and efficient delivery of services within hospital operating theatres.
The programme develops advanced competencies in perioperative theatre safety, prevention of healthcare-associated infections, preparation and maintenance of surgical instruments and apparatus, theatre technical services, patient-support procedures, theatre administration and resource management.
Learners receive practical training in theatre preparation, surgical safety procedures, sterile techniques, instrument handling, equipment checks, documentation, stock control, teamwork and supervised perioperative clinical support. Training combines classroom instruction, skills simulation, practical assessment and industry placement in a recognised healthcare facility with an operating theatre.
This programme prepares graduates to work responsibly as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team. It does not qualify a graduate to work independently as a surgeon, nurse or anaesthesia provider.
The Level 6 curriculum includes safety, infection prevention, instrument maintenance, technical services, administration, resource management, psychosocial support and participation in perioperative clinical services.
