Course Overview

The Diploma in Medical Engineering prepares trainees to support the safe and reliable use of medical equipment and hospital engineering systems.

Training combines electrical engineering, electronics, mechanical systems, human anatomy and physiology, workshop practice, hospital infrastructure, medical equipment technology and maintenance management.

Learners develop practical competence in equipment inspection, installation, preventive maintenance, fault diagnosis, repair, performance verification, documentation and technical support. They also gain exposure to equipment used in laboratories, operating theatres, maternity units, intensive care units, renal departments, imaging departments, dental clinics, eye and ENT clinics, physiotherapy departments and other healthcare settings.

The programme includes classroom learning, laboratory and workshop practice, competency-based assessment and supervised industry training in an appropriate healthcare or medical-equipment environment.

Learning Outcomes

Apply electrical, electronic, mechanical and mathematical principles in medical equipment maintenance.

Interpret technical drawings, circuit diagrams, service manuals and manufacturers’ instructions.

Use workshop tools, electronic test instruments and maintenance equipment safely.

Explain basic human anatomy and physiology in relation to medical equipment functions.

Inspect, install and commission medical equipment under appropriate supervision.

Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance.

Diagnose electrical, electronic, mechanical and control-system faults.

Conduct electrical safety checks and equipment performance verification.

Maintain diagnostic and laboratory equipment.

Service selected operating-theatre and sterilization equipment.

Support equipment used in maternity, ICU, renal, dental and imaging departments.

Maintain ophthalmic, ENT, physiotherapy and orthopaedic equipment.

Support hospital plant, utilities and building-service systems.

Maintain equipment histories, job cards, inventories and maintenance schedules.

Apply occupational safety, infection-prevention and environmental practices.

Communicate technical findings to healthcare workers, supervisors and equipment suppliers.

Entry Requirements

Applicants should meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • KCSE mean grade C− or its equivalent; or

  • A relevant KNQF Level 5 qualification; or

  • Another equivalent qualification recognised by the relevant Kenyan authorities.

A background or demonstrated ability in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, electricity or technical subjects is highly beneficial.

To qualify for the Level 6 award, a trainee must demonstrate competence in all prescribed units, including the required practical and workplace components.
